I’d go as far as saying this is the finest Western released in the 21st Century so far, narrowly beating out Django Unchained. James Mangold's reimagining of the 1957 film incorporates essential scenes that address gaps in the narrative and develop characters who felt underdeveloped in the original. The central figure now wrestles with maintaining his farm and upholding his family’s esteem while the opposing force seems weary of his existence and his own kin. Introducing children into these roles was a clever move by the writers, allowing for a deeper understanding of Bale and Crowe's portrayals. Both deliver exceptionally subtle performances, offering viewers the chance to witness their characters evolve in reaction to one another throughout the film’s duration. Lerman and Foster are well-suited as the younger men—one transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, the other idealizing his father with a disturbing intensity. The remainder of the ensemble cast is also perfectly selected. The visuals are breathtaking at times; however, unlike many Westerns, this one highlights the landscape itself – it almost becomes another character in its own right. When showcased, the scenery is truly beautiful—I hadn't encountered snow depicted in a Western before, and it looks fantastic. The musical score evokes echoes of classic, well-known Western soundtracks, yet Beltrami manages to create something distinct. The sound design is also impressive, even incorporating a heartbeat-like pulse from an idling train’s engine during the final moments. Everything else about the film is flawless—the lighting, editing, costumes, and set design all contribute to this impression. It doesn't feel like an independent production that major studios shied away from; it’s clear those involved were deeply invested in bringing it to life, which likely explains its quality. This demonstrates how a movie should be remade. Go see it.
