I appreciate it when characters from the future use regular cigarettes. It might not be realistic, but it makes sense to me. Cigarettes aren’t just about smoking; they represent the main characters' feeling of listlessness. Smoking isn't simply self-destruction; it’s a way of wasting time. It’s a habit people pick up because they don’t have anything else to do. There must be long, boring periods on the spaceship in 3022, just like there were aboard the Nostromo (at least until the characters would rather be bored than dead). The Pangea space station refuels spacecraft headed for Earth's first space colony, Europa One. Crews from different countries maintain Pangea with ten-year rotations. Four American astronauts arrive to start their assignment. They are Captain John Laine (Omar Epps), Engineer Jackie Miller (Kate Walsh), Dr. Richard Valin (Angus Macfadyen), and Lisa Brown (Miranda Cosgrove). It seems like Jackie and Lisa really enjoy space, since they’re willing to leave their infant daughter on Earth and spend most of their twenties working on a space station. They don't seem to have any problems for the first couple of years. By the third year, though, boredom starts to creep in, which might partly explain John and Jackie’s romantic involvement; physical intimacy being an acceptable substitute for smoking. The initial period is effectively conveyed through a wordless opening montage—a series of short scenes accompanied by piano and strings. The actual story begins when Richard has to diagnose John, who's experiencing night terrors among other things, with space madness (or something similar). John isn’t mentally fit to continue as captain, which inexplicably means that the rest of the crew must also leave their positions, causing Jackie to worry about their careers. These concerns will quickly become unimportant when they find an asteroid field where Earth used to be. Epps, Walsh, and Macfadyen do a good job developing distinct ways to descend into madness. Cosgrove doesn’t have much opportunity to do anything beyond using language that would surprise viewers of iCarly. And then there are the special effects, which range from an obviously fake fire to exterior shots reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey. 3022 is a smaller-scale production, but still worthwhile.
