John Chard on 3 Godfathers

7/10 · Feb 9, 2017

This is a touching and heartfelt film by John Ford. Ford had previously adapted this story in 1919 as Marked Men starring Harry Carey, so he clearly appreciated this charming tale of redemption. The movie begins with a moving acknowledgment of his friend and mentor Carey, who had died the year before and also appeared in the 1916 version of The Three Godfathers; it was also Ford’s first Western filmed in color. The narrative follows three criminals—Robert Hightower (John Wayne), Pedro "Pete" Fuerte (Pedro Armendariz), and The Abilene Kid (Harry Carey Junior)—who, after robbing a bank in Welcome, are being pursued by a posse of lawmen. After encountering difficulties during a desert sandstorm, the men continue on to Terrapin Tanks, where they find a woman giving birth. Sadly, she dies shortly afterward, but before doing so, she asks the men to look after her baby. They consent and set out on a dangerous trip to deliver the child safely to "New Jerusalem." It's an unusual sort of Western, though in a positive sense. The film benefits from Ford’s consistently high-quality location work and Winton Hoch’s energetic performance. Ward Bond also provides his typical reliable support as the Sheriff; 3 Godfathers is definitely worth seeing if you are interested in the careers of John Ford and John Wayne. It has received varied opinions among fans of both Johns, which is easy to understand considering how unpredictable the film can be, but it’s a movie that tends to stick with you after viewing. 7/10
