Sejian on 28 Years Later

6/10 · Aug 11, 2025

What on earth did I just sit through? **SPOILERS AHEAD!** The initial hour and fourteen minutes felt bizarre, foolish, and an enormous waste of my time. Dean’s 1/10 rating seems entirely justified. The first seventeen minutes were almost unbearable. I guess “Boots” might have some historical importance, but all it did was constantly pull me out of the story. The choice to incorporate medieval scenes and war footage just made things worse. If that had continued much longer—the medieval stuff reappears later, though not the "Boots"—I would’ve stopped watching altogether. From the seventeen-minute mark until around that hour and fourteen minute point I mentioned earlier, the movie is varying degrees of foolishness. It's mostly adults behaving in a dumb way. There’s nothing more irritating to me in a film than supposedly capable adult characters doing genuinely stupid things. Dad is an idiot. Grandpa, or whoever he is, is an idiot. Mom is okay. The soldier boys are idiots. The villagers are idiots. The rage beasts are just rage beasts, so they get a free pass. The boy is foolish, but I blame the father for that. After that hour and fourteen minute point, the movie shifts its focus to the mom, the boy, and the doctor, and this is where it actually manages to be good. But then it goes back to being stupid again. "Samson" has a really large appendage— Is that even real? How big does it get when… "Samson's" enormous d*** is probably the highlight of the movie! Sorry, I got sidetracked! The last time we see the doctor, he’s being stupid. Then we are introduced to the “Howzats”! The “Howzats” are a special kind of stupid, but it's a fun sort of stupid. They're the only genuinely enjoyable stupidity in the entire movie. There are two decent parts in this film—one is somewhere in the middle and the other is at the very end—and that’s the only reason I’m giving it a 6/10. Hey! That rhymed! Also, yes, I've seen "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later". “28 Days Later” is one of my favorites in this genre, and “28 Weeks Later” wasn’t terrible, but this—this isn’t like those. It has the feel of "Matrix: Resurrections." The impression I get is that the director was told a movie would happen with or without him, so he just went along with it. If that's not what happened, then I have no idea.
