'28 Years Later' provides a really solid film; I wouldn’t place it dramatically behind the original, which is admittedly better. I had anticipated something more intensely disturbing from the promotional material, especially given that memorable (and excellent) incorporation of Rudyard Kipling's "Boots." Even so, it manages to be unsettling at times, and for me, represents the closest these films have gotten to genuinely scary. The casting is consistently strong in these movies, and even with what’s arguably their least impressive ensemble yet, they still make a mark. Ralph Fiennes particularly dominates. Fiennes delivers a great performance, as does Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Jodie Comer feels believable, and young Alfie Williams contributes more than his role might have demanded. Edvin Ryding's character felt uncertain initially, but I ended up appreciating him by the film’s conclusion; there are no real issues with any of the actors. The concluding scene is completely unexpected—I honestly can’t believe they took it in that direction. It immediately reminded me of "the fixer," and I wondered if I was imagining a connection, but I was actually correct. I'm eager to see what comes next; the casting choices were certainly well-made. The next installment isn’t far off, slated for January 2026, and it will likely be worth seeing regardless of anything else. This 2025 release looks impressive visually and provides a diverting narrative as well.
