It’s been a long wait—a full 18 years since 28 Weeks Later came out—and I know I'm not alone in having really high hopes for this next installment. The story takes place 28 years after the initial outbreak, within a UK that’s now entirely walled off and divided into quarantined zones. We follow a family living in one of these protected villages. The father has a job that requires him to scout outside the village boundaries, so the central storyline revolves around what happens when their 12-year-old son is exposed to the world beyond the walls and encounters new, more advanced kinds of zombies and people who have adapted to the changed circumstances. The film boasts solid production values, and the early scenes where the father and son venture into the countryside recapture the intensity of the earlier films—that relentless feeling of being chased by hordes of zombies and never getting a moment's peace. But it feels like the director was trying too hard to be creative, inserting sequences that resemble those from The Shining, indulging in overwrought melodrama, and even including an absurd fight scene with people doing what looked like kung fu moves, which brought Kung Fu Hustle to mind. Despite these issues, it’s still a decent film worth seeing. With some tighter editing, it could have lived up to the expectations of those of us who've been waiting for so long, but as it stands, it falls short and is somewhat disappointing.
