Wong Kar-wai delivers another noteworthy film, this time incorporating science fiction elements into his characteristic blend of romance and well-developed characters. Tony Leung returns to the role of "Chow mo-wan" from “In the Mood for Love” (2000), now back in Hong Kong to work on a book centered around a place called "2046." While writing, he develops connections with four different women, but his attempts at moving forward and distancing himself from the memories of his deceased wife only seem to make it more difficult. Does “2046” suggest that recollections are permanent, or perhaps don’t truly exist—that time remains fixed? Leung navigates this emotionally intense film with skill, and as expected, there's a diverse soundtrack that effectively maintains the feeling of disorientation. It might run slightly too long, but it remains an engaging cinematic work from someone who demonstrates considerable ability in balancing ideas and characters.
