It’s been only twelve months since Hasraf Dulull’s “The Beyond,” and now he has another science fiction film called "2036 Origin Unknown." Unfortunately, this one is also rather dull, even more so than his previous effort. For a large portion of the movie's length, Katee Sackhoff—perhaps best recognized for her role as a lesbian mercenary with an interest in Riddick—is essentially isolated within a single room, interacting with the ship’s artificial intelligence or her character’s sister through a screen. This proves to be the central issue. The truth is, Katee Sackhoff isn't quite like Tom Hanks, and it becomes apparent early on that she struggles to carry the film effectively. While she does an adequate job given the material, the movie ultimately feels very flat and, yes, boring. There are also some scenes taken from "Mars," but they aren’t well-executed in any way; if you're seeking something visually appealing, “The Martian” is a better choice. "2036 Origin Unknown" isn't offensively bad or impossible to sit through, it just feels like an unproductive use of time, even for dedicated science fiction enthusiasts.
