With a $200 million budget, director Roland Emmerich delivered this film, which is simple to find fault with on an intellectual or artistic level. Those who specialize in science fiction likely had issues with the scientific accuracy, and it certainly feels stretched out, running about an hour too long—the latter half becomes noticeably slow. There’s a limit to how many times one can witness the main characters escaping destruction through various means before the enjoyment diminishes. Nevertheless… The destructive visuals are top-notch, truly impressive both audibly and visually; Emmerich excels at this type of spectacle. Featuring a cast that comfortably handles the straightforward disaster movie script, it’s a perfectly acceptable popcorn film. It also isn't shy about delving into darker themes, moments which—though not always unexpected—have an emotional impact. The filmmakers acknowledge their genre influences and aren't hesitant to exploit them. "2012" earned $500 million, a significant financial success that shouldn’t be overlooked. Viewers readily embraced it; they frequently enjoy this kind of movie, desiring to see the world destroyed, chases, collisions, and people either perishing or acting bravely. If you dissect it analytically, its flaws become obvious. However, when viewed as a modern popcorn film—purely for entertainment—it’s grand, dramatic, and thrilling. Even if you need to shift in your seat around the two-hour mark. 7/10
