I need to pause a moment...are you absolutely certain this isn't another installment in the "2012" series starring John Cusack? It seems impossible, because this movie makes that earlier film look like a masterpiece. Kelvin, portrayed by a once-capable Brian Krause, leads a group attempting to launch nuclear missiles into space to redirect a massive supernova threatening Earth. His wife (Heather McComb) and daughter (Najarra Townsend) wander through the desert, dodging poorly created computer animation and a large ensemble cast. That's essentially what happens in the story: the planet is on track to collide with a supernova, a few people express concern, scientists toss around technical jargon like "magnetic shield" and "nuclear," spend considerable time “recalculating” and "running simulations" on their computers...there’s even a ninja involved who wants to sabotage the effort to save the world…and a couple of Iranians are included for some reason...it's just awful. The film comes from The Asylum, known for producing low-budget, direct-to-video movies with titles designed to resemble popular theatrical releases. Have you unfortunately encountered "Sinister Squad," "Independents' Day," "AVH: Alien vs. Hunter," or "Transmorphers?" If so, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. It’s disheartening that a company would hold its product (and audience) in such low esteem, resorting to deceptive tactics instead of pursuing something original that could distinguish itself within the crowded world of video and streaming entertainment. The filmmaking is dreadful, the budget must have been minimal, and all the actors appear visibly uncomfortable. It doesn't seem like anyone put any effort into their performances; I hope they were paid well for it. "2012: Supernova" ranks among the worst films I’ve ever witnessed. I trust that gets my point across. (½) out of five stars. The film is unrated and includes physical violence, mild gun violence, some profanity, mild sexual references, some adult situations, alcohol and tobacco use.
