A different path exists beyond violence. In 1922 Nebraska, two members of a family who grow corn commit an offense and manage to avoid consequences—or so it seems. Thomas Jane and Molly Parker portray the parents, with Dylan Schmid appearing as their teenage son. “1922,” which came out in 2017, is a disturbing crime drama set in the past that incorporates horror elements, as one would expect from a story by Stephen King. The film’s setting on an isolated farm, its atmosphere, and even its genre have similarities to movies such as “The Messengers” (2007), “Husk” (2011), and “Signs” (2002). There's also a reference to "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967). Thomas Jane’s acting deserves recognition; he truly becomes the character, making him nearly unrecognizable. His rural accent is so pronounced that I would suggest using subtitles. The movie explores ideas of betrayal, the risks associated with unchecked anger, misuse of power/deception, and the influence of a person's moral compass. The film’s length is 1 hour and 42 minutes, and it was filmed in Western Australia, surprisingly enough. Kaitlyn Bernard plays the part of the son’s neighbor’s girlfriend, and Neal McDonough portrays her father. GRADE: B
