Takashi Miike demonstrates his skill at portraying genuine horror stemming from people’s inner turmoil, which is strikingly apparent in the harsh portrayal of Lord Naritsugu, the antagonist of this film. The characterization of this figure provides a compelling reason to remain engaged and observe the lengthy 45-minute fight sequence that occurs later on, fueled by a desire to see him face consequences. The historical setting of Japan feels believable and well-realized, and the final confrontation is gratifying in its graphic intensity. The narrative remains straightforward, with Miike initially focusing on developing an exceptionally unpleasant and detestable villain alongside the assassins and their courageous leader, Shinzaemon; subsequently, the film provides a very rewarding reckoning through a continuous onslaught of action, blood, and dirt. It's definitely worth seeing if that’s what you enjoy!
