It's not uncommon to encounter narratives centered on slavery within the United States, yet I haven’t found another like this one, which depicts a free person being abducted and forced into servitude. It’s this modern form of human trafficking that leads to the downfall of Solomon Northup (Chiwitel Ejiofor), a man with a family and a good life, who is then subjected to severe beatings before being sold to work on Louisiana sugar plantations. He's portrayed as an intelligent individual possessing both integrity and resilience—qualities that become problematic for the timid bully “Tibeats” (Paul Dano) and later for the cruel “Epps” (Michael Fassbender), who viewed his slaves as nothing more than property to be exploited at his discretion. This allowed him ample opportunity not only to inflict physical harm but also to treat women, including his increasingly frustrated wife (Sarah Paulson), as objects of sexual desire. The unrelenting nature of this existence pushes Solomon to withdraw into himself in an attempt to endure it, but the arrival of “Bass” (Brad Pitt), who holds a contrasting perspective on enslavement, offers a glimmer of hope for him to reclaim some sense of self. This film serves as a stark condemnation of a horrific practice. Steve McQueen doesn't shy away from depicting the pervasive evil that existed, a culture that frequently justified itself through biblical references and regarded female slaves—brilliantly embodied by Lupita Nyong’o as “Patsey”—as mere possessions. The meticulous production design creates an authentic atmosphere, with costumes and settings adding depth to what is a truly remarkable showcase of acting talent; nearly everyone delivers a noteworthy performance. Michael Fassbender's portrayal is particularly disturbing, and the constant presence of toxicity throughout Solomon’s captivity paints a brutal picture that can be difficult to witness. This is a forceful and deeply affecting cinematic experience.
