It turns out that the film mainly exists to showcase Glenn Close’s portrayal of Dodie Smith’s appropriately titled "Cruella De Vil," who has a fondness for fur, especially if it is luxurious and uncommon. Upon learning that Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson own 101 Dalmatians, she decides a new coat is in order and sends two rather clumsy assistants to steal the dogs. There are moments of humor, though they largely unfold along expected lines. A dependable British cast contributes to keeping things moving forward, but ultimately this feels geared toward children and isn't as good as the animated version.
