Tom Gries directed 100 Rifles, which he also adapted from Robert MacLeod’s novel, The Californio, with Clair Huffaker. Burt Reynolds, Jim Brown, Raquel Welch, Fernando Lamas, and Dan O'Herlihy are in the cast. Jerry Goldsmith handled the music, and Cecilio Paniagua was responsible for the cinematography. Arizona lawman Lydecker (Brown) goes into Mexico to apprehend bank robber Yaqui Joe Herrera (Reynolds), only to find himself caught up in a conflict between the Yaquis and the Mexican military. It’s an enjoyable action film with some Spaghetti Western elements, and 100 Rifles has plenty of star power and familiar genre thrills. Filming took place in Almeria, Spain, which provides attractive scenery. The script contains both corny lines and more thoughtful exchanges that work well within the movie's context. There’s a fair amount of violence, with several action scenes handled effectively; it also possesses a playful tone and has its share of sensuality. While the performers aren’t delivering award-winning performances, they are entertaining to watch as we encounter shady antagonists and endearing characters. It's an enjoyable experience overall. 7/10
