Folks are odd; it’s not easy to get them to see what’s truly good for them. Dan Trachtenberg directed 10 Cloverfield Lane, with the screenplay by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Damien Chazelle. The cast includes John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. Bear McCreary composed the music, and Jeff Cutter handled the cinematography. Michelle (Winstead) comes to after a car accident and discovers she’s trapped inside an underground bunker... Right away, it's clear that going into this movie knowing as little as possible will really enhance your experience. The payoff is substantial. Trachtenberg and his collaborators have created a film that’s tense from the very beginning; it constantly keeps you guessing about what’s happening. We're not only confused by the interactions between the three characters in the shelter, especially concerning Howard (Goodman), who runs the place, but also uncertain about what has occurred outside. If anything? This contributes to the feeling of being closed-in that is already established by where the story takes place. One of its best qualities is how it gets us, as viewers, to feel Michelle’s anxiety while simultaneously celebrating her cleverness and ability to adapt. Similarly, her connection with Emmett (Gallagher Jr.), the third person in the shelter, develops naturally and provides a sense of optimism amidst what appears to be a very difficult situation. As the story progresses, however, things start to align in an uneasy way, punctuated by brief moments of action, surprises, and genuine fear, all leading up to the final act and its revelations. Those reveals will either have you completely satisfied or angry at the filmmakers for their choices... The three lead actors deliver outstanding performances—it's good to see some filmmakers still recognize Goodman’s talent. The film is also technically strong in terms of sound and visuals; this tightly wound thriller is a success. 8.5/10
