Vietnam Trilogy

The Vietnam Trilogy is a collection of three films by Ann Hui, created between 1978 and 1982. This series of works chronicles the period when tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees migrated to Hong Kong by cargo ships in the four years prior to 1979. Marking a significant phase in Hui’s career, the trilogy offers acute insights into this chapter of Hong Kong's history and the experiences of these migrants. The films collectively run for 250 minutes and generated a total revenue of 1,988,145. The trilogy began with 獅子山下：來客 in 1978, followed by 胡越的故事 in 1981 and concluded with 投奔怒海 in 1982. These films address the complex social issues surrounding Vietnamese migration to Hong Kong during this period. The Vietnam Trilogy emerged as a response to the increasing public discussion of Vietnamese migrants in Hong Kong. The collection provides a focused examination of this specific historical event through Hui's filmmaking.
