The One-Armed Swordsman Collection is a four-film series originating from the Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong, spanning from 1967 to 1976. It marked a shift in wuxia filmmaking, introducing a darker tone centered on male anti-heroes, intense sword combat, and graphic violence. The collection began with One-Armed Swordsman (1967), directed by Chang Cheh, which achieved significant financial success and propelled its star Jimmy Wang to prominence. This initial film established the core elements of the series. The subsequent films, Return of the One-Armed Swordsman (1969) and The New One-Armed Swordsman (1971), continued the narrative direction set by the first installment, with Chang Cheh serving as director, writer, and a consistent creative force throughout the trilogy. While maintaining continuity in key personnel, the final film featured a new lead actor. The collection's total runtime is 428 minutes, and it achieved a local box office revenue of HK$1 million with the first film. The One-Armed Swordsman Collection has since attained classic status within Hong Kong cinema, earning recognition such as being voted the 15th best Chinese language film in the 2005 Hong Kong Film Awards poll.
